WASHINGTON — More than two dozen Prince George’s County homes were evacuated on Monday because a portion of road is collapsing, causing water main and sewer failure.
Twenty-eight homes in the Piscataway Hills community near Fort Washington were impacted, officials say. On Friday, crews responded to a crack in Piscataway Drive and then a water leak. On Saturday, a pipe burst and on Sunday there was a another water main break. Throughout this period, several trees fell, officials at the scene told WTOP’s Michelle Basch.
They also say “further road failure is continuing.”
The evacuations were ordered because homes on the dead-end road have limited access to water and sewer services. Some of the homes lost power and some lost water, officials say. Six houses are considered unsafe and 22 were deemed unfit.
The road has been patched so that residents could move cars out and that WSSC has two crews working simultaneously to make repairs. Water is expected to return to 14 homes by Monday night, Basch says.
The Red Cross is working with residents to make sure they have alternative shelter.
It will take two weeks to determine what caused the slope failure.
